ABSTRACT

Iron in the +6 oxidation state [Fe(VI)] is an environmentally friendly oxidant that can be used in water disinfection and wastewater treatment. The reduction potential of ferrate ion [Fe(VI)] in acidic pH is higher (2.20 V) than in basic condition (0.70 V). The electrochemical synthesis of ferrate ion in perchloric acid solution was carried out over inert electrode of boron doped diamond, using FeSO4 solution at low concentration. The ferrate ion electrochemically generated in situ was directly applied to promote the decolourization of two synthetic azo dyes, Acid Yellow 36 and Methyl Orange.
